Tracuit Hütte – Bishorn – Tracuit Hütte

Download file: bishorn2.gpx   The Tracuit Hütte is closed and used as a biwakhütte until the end of June, so we thought this is a nice opportunity to climb Bishorn. 4th of June is a holiday, so we started early morning so that we can reach the biwak before sundown. We arrived in Zinal around midday.

Zinal

Zinal – Parkplace

From the last parking lot in Zinal we start in the direction of the town center. At the first crossroads a sign indicates that the Tracuit Hütte 4 hours away.

Short break under the scorching sun

The road takes us up on the west side of the mountain, with full exposure to the sun.

Bishorn

Looking back at Zinal

At around 2400 meters we reach the waterfall, here  we cross the small river and reach the first snow-leftovers.

Sheepherders hütte at 2500 meters

On the platue the we met some snow spots, and after 2700 meters the surface was fully covered wih snow.

The hütte in the distance

We could se the hütte from here, although it is a good 2 hours of walking distance away. Because of the snow we could not follow the regular trail, we made our own. We sometimes sank in it until the thight.

Near the hütte

At the real steep part, we climbed up on the loose rocks, luckily there was not too much snow. The last 5 meters is a nice grade 2 climb.

Small climb

And we reached the hütte 🙂

Tracuit and Bishor (sadly in fog)

The Tracuit hütte was built in the last few years. It is ultra modern. Because the personel will arrive only and of June the hütte was open, and free bedrooms were provided for the tired trekkers 🙂 A fireplace and lavatory is also provided firewood was next to the building. All this for 25 CHF per person for members. Water we had to melt from snow. Basic pots were also provided, plus you could by beer and water of the shelfs (money was collected in a small money box) That night there were only 3 teams, so every team had its own room.

Tracuit Hütte – this room is ours!

We collected some snow, melted it and prepared tee and pasta, chatted with the others, then went to bed.

Sundown

The next day we got up early had breakfast and headed to the top at 4:30. We had to be really fast, because a sunny day was promised and we didn’t want to cross the gletscher on melted snow. Luckily, the night was cold enough, and the snow froze a little bit.

The goal ahead of us!

Headlamps were not used, because we had a clear sky, with an almost full moon. We saw some cracks on the gletscher, but we could avoid them. we crossed it directly and gained 100-200 meters height, although we did the 2/3rd otf the whole distance.

Crossing the Turtmann gletscher

Reaching the foot of the Bishorn we try to stay on the not so steep parts.

Bishorn in the rising sun

Here we start to ascend fast, we are headed to the P.Burnaby pass. The snow was good, we didn’t use the crampons.

Our way in the rising sun

No wind, no clouds, too warm…for me at least.

Almost there!

Besides us another team made it to the top. The used skies, which were handy above the hütte. They overtook us on the gletscher.

Reaching the top the other team cheered us and we made it to our first 4000 peak!

We enjoyed the calm moment of reaching our goal, ate a few bites, then headed back.

Weisshorn, a dream for our next life 🙂

We managed to get down really fast, both of us fell in a small crack but it was not so bad. The snow was really melting. Getting back was harder then getting up. But we managed to get back until 10:30. The other teams were already gone. So we were alone in the fancy new hütte.

Looking back at the Bishorn from the hütte

We fired up, and melted some snow. We stil had 1600 heightmeters to go. We slept a little, packed and started the boring descent.

Leaving the hütte

We met another team on the way down, they were heading up.

Cutting the track

We took a rest at the sheepherders little cottage, and we were happy that the snowy pat is over. After a total descent of 2100 meters we arrived at the car tired and happy. 04-05.06.2015.

Last fall we already tried this climb, but the weather, the costs(60 CHF/person) and the really not nice staff int the hütte forced us to turn back at around 3700 meters. Everybody turned back that day, because you could only see 1-2 meters ahead.
